PHARMACEUTICAL PROPERTIES
COLIMOX is a combination of two major antibiotics in veterinary medicine: colistin and amoxicillin. Colistin is an antibiotic in the polypeptide family with great activity against gram negative germs, especially colibacilli and salmonella. Its particular mode of action results in the disorganization of the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane by an effect similar to that of a detergent. This effect works on germs in multiplication as well as in resting state. This mode of action greatly reduces the emergence of resistance to this antibiotic. Colistin also works by inactivating bacterial endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides). Colistin is very poorly absorbed from the digestive tract, which makes it very effective against gastrointestinal infections. Colistin is eliminated mainly in the active form via the kidneys (parenteral route) or fecal route (oral route). Colistin sulfate is also very soluble in water. Amoxicillin, an antibiotic from the aminopenicillin group, has bactericidal effects against many pathogenic germs in the target species. Amoxicillin has excellent pharmacokinetic properties: resistance in digestive acid pH, good digestive absorption and good tissue diffusion. The plasma half-life of amoxicillin is relatively short, resulting in a relatively short withdrawal period.
TARGET SPECIES
Poultry.
INDICATIONS
Infections with germs sensitive to the amoxicillin-colistin association in target species. COLIMOX is especially indicated in the treatment of colibacillosis, salmonellosis, respiratory infections, infectious enteritis and staphylococcal disease.
ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE
Oral use in drinking water at a dose of: Poultry: 75,000 IU of colistin and 20 mg of amoxicillin per kg bodyweight per day, i.e. 100 g powder / 1000 kg bodyweight / day, for 3 to 5 consecutive days. As an indication, COLIMOX can be used at a rate of 1 kg / ton of drinking water.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND INTERACTIONS
- Do not use in patients with renal insufficiency. Hypersensitivity to Penicillins.
- Do not use in laying hens whose products are intended for human consumption.
- Do not use in rabbits and rodents.
- Do not combine with other antibiotics known to be nephrotoxic (aminoglycosides, cephalosporins).
If the doses and contraindications are respected, no side effects are observed in the target species.
